Hyungjin Choi

A native South Korean, Hyungjin Choi is a New York-based jazz and classical pianist.

In her career, Ms. Choi has recorded and performed actively on multiple continents. She is assistant music director and organist at Calvary - St. Geroge’s Episcopal Church in Manhattan, and holds a private teaching studio. With her passion for both classical and jazz music, she coordinated a concert series, Jazzical Sessions, in the Bronx in 2017. Along with her husband, cellist Benjamin Larsen, she actively performs worldwide in the Larsen-Choi Duo, covering extensive repertoire and the world premieres of works by notable composers such as Robert Sirota, Marjorie Merryman, and Ke-chia Chen.

Ms. Choi's debut album, "Tales Of A Dreamer", was released on PND Records on March 24th, 2014. Her arranging work can be found in many recordings, including Lara Downes’ album, “Holes in the Sky”, and “Some of These Days”, released on Sony Masterworks; in the Korean Music Award nominated album, “Coffee Calls for a Cigarette”, by Souldman and Minos; and Manami Aoki’s production, “Opera is Boring?”, which was premiered in Japan in 2023.

After training as a classical pianist from an early age, Ms. Choi graduated from the Seoul Institute of the Arts in 2006, and moved to New York in 2008 to attend the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, where she earned a BFA degree in the Performing Arts in 2010, receiving the Jazz Scholarship, and the Noah Osnos Scholarship. There, she worked with Sam Yahel, Reggie Workman, Charles Tolliver, Jimmy Owens, Charlie Persip, Kevin Hays, and Billy Harper, with whom she worked for his recording project during her time at the New School. She also studied under John Forconi at Manhattan School of Music, where she holds a Master’s Degree in collaborative piano. She currently works as a staff pianist at Manhattan School of Music.
